Red, WHITE, and Blue… Inside the Republican National Convention

By Aura Blogando

My legs are really tired today from covering the marches nightly for more than a week - so other people from the Pacifica Team are on the streets tonight, where it sounds like police have once again made several arrests and used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse a crowd of protesters. So I am spending the day inside the Republican National Convention… Where the stands are quite empty:

Besides the fact that the attendees are mostly white (in contrast to the Democratic National Convention, which was about 40% people of color), it seems that another common thing these delegates have in common is their love for hats. There are countless cowboy hats (even Minnesota Viking defensive end Jared Allen is here wearing one); hats with red, white and blue bells; hats with red, white and blue ribbons; and red, white and blue Fox News hats:

Oh snap I almost forgot the um… Elephant hat:

Women around here also like pins, like these two women from Washington whose pins light up in red, white and blue lights:

Miss Minnesota and Miss Minnesota Teen and also here, thanks:

Actually, I should remember that there are some people of color, especially behind the nearly empty concessions stands:

Like I said, it’s very different here than at the DNC. Sorry I don’t have more to write – I am still recovering from the other planet that is the floor at the RNC.

the RNC is whiter than white on rice in a glass of milk on a paper plate in a snowstorm! (major payne)
